SCHOOL VISION SCREENINGS
The Cumberland/Lincoln Lions Club will conduct vision screenings at our school on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. This is a free yearly screening provided to all R.I. students. All students in Pre-k, Kindergarten, and grades 1-5 are required to be tested as required by the RIDOH.

Welcome to the new school year!
I would like to extend a warm welcome to students and their families. I am looking forward to working with you and your children at Northern Lincoln Elementary School during the upcoming school year. To ensure your child’s health and safety, I would like to share a few items with you.
HEALTH CONCERNS: Please inform your school nurse of any severe allergies, surgeries, accidents or new health problems that occurred during the summer months or which may occur during the school year.
MEDICATIONS:
- No child is to take or carry prescription or over the counter medication to school. If a child must receive medications in school, state law requires a physician order prior to administering medication. Therefore, a prescription label IS NOT acceptable in lieu of a doctor's order. A written order must be obtained from the prescribing doctor. This order and the prescribed medication in its original container must be brought to school by the parent/guardian. All medication MUST be administered in the nurse’s office.
- If you administer medication to your child before he/she comes to school, which could affect their performance, please send in a note to the teacher or the nurse.
- INHALERS, EPIPENS, and DIASTAT’s- The doctor must complete and provide an action plan and a written order. These forms along with the prescribed medication in its original container must be brought to school by the parent/guardian and can be dropped off at the nurse’s door (ring the doorbell). All medications MUST be kept in the nurse’s office. All forms expire yearly.
ILLNESS/ABSENCES:
Please contact the school office in the morning if your child is to be absent and inform them why he/she will not be attending. This information is important because it helps the nurse track certain illnesses within the school environment. If your child has been ill, he/she should be free of a temperature (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit ) and or vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child is diagnosed with any of the following communicable diseases please notify the nurse: Strep Throat, Chicken Pox, Impetigo, Scabies, Head Lice, Pink Eye, viral/diarrhea illness and Fifth’s Disease. The exclusion time for each is:
- Vomiting/Diarrhea-24 hours without symptoms.
- Strep Throat and Impetigo – Per doctor recommendation. Typically 12-24 hours after treatment.
- Chicken Pox - 7 days or until lesions are crusted over.
- Scabies/Ringworm - 24 hours after initial application of medication and an MD note
- Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) - 24 hours after initial dose of medication
- Fifth’s Disease – Exclusion is at the discretion of your family MD or until fever subsides
ILLNESSES:
If your child is seen in the urgent care, ER, or develops an illness, or head lice on the weekend or during a vacation period, please let me know. It is also helpful if you send in documentation of the visit, and call the Nurse’s Office at 401-356-0264, or email me at [email protected]
** If you are emailing your child’s teacher about a health related matter, please cc me, as I Inform other staff, lunch, and recess personnel as needed.
SCREENINGS:
As per RI State Law the following screenings will be done at Northern Lincoln Elementary School. During the school year information will be provided through a letter giving specific dates for the vision, hearing and dental screenings, so please watch for this information.
- VISION SCREENING: will be conducted by the Lions Club and school nurse. If your child wears glasses please remind him/her to wear them every day. You will be notified only if your child does not pass the screening.
- HEARING SCREENING: Done by the Rhode Island Hearing Center for Grades Pre-K through 3rd grade. This screening typically takes place in the Spring.
- DENTAL SCREENING: The dentist will screen all children unless a dental card is completed and signed by their dentist, and on file in the nurse’s office. Dental cards are available in the nurse’s office.
- Vision: A note from a private ophthalmologist or primary care physician stating that a vision exam has been completed within the last six months.
- Dental: A note from the family Dentist stating that a dental exam has been completed.
Snacks eaten in the classroom must be peanut/tree nut free. Granola bars are not allowed due to the possibility of cross contamination at the manufacturer. Also, no food can be brought in for classroom celebrations.
JUST IN CASE CLOTHES: I do have extra clothes in the office, but sizes are limited.
- Pre-K and Kindergarten: Please send an extra set of clothes in a baggie that can be kept in the bottom of your child’s backpack for those times when their clothes become soiled due to spills, not making it to the bathroom in time, etc.
- Grades 1-5: Please send extra clothes on/ after rainy and snowy days. Clothes get wet/ soiled on the way to school, during recess, or during lunch due to spills.
*****Flu Clinics for Northern Lincoln Elementary School will be held at the Lincoln Middle School in the fall. Dates are to be determined. All are welcome to attend.

What To Do:
When To Resume Activities:
When you go back to your normal activities, It is recommended to take added precaution over the next 5 days, such as taking additional steps for cleaner air, hygiene, masks, physical distancing, and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors.
Important To Note:
Monitor your symptoms: If you have an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing or chest pain), seek emergency medical care immediately.
- Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren't better explained by another cause. These symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others.
When To Resume Activities:
- You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
- Your symptoms are getting better overall
- You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication)

- You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). Then take added precautions for the next 5 days

Hearing Screening Reminder
The Rhode Island School for the Deaf Hearing Center will conduct hearing screenings at Northern Lincoln Elementary School on Monday, February 12, 2024. State Law requires children in preschool, kindergarten, grades 1, 2, 3 and any child new to the school system (who does not have a hearing screening history on file) be given a hearing exam by a qualified professional. Please provide documentation of the most recent hearing screening (within the last six months) in order to exempt your child from the school screening by Tuesday, February 6, 2024. You can obtain this documentation from your family doctor or audiologist.
A reminder letter and hearing questionnaire has been sent home with each student. Plesase contact the nurse's office with any questions.

Vision Screening Reminder
The Cumberland/Lincoln Lions Club will conduct vision screenings at our school on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. This is a free yearly screening provided to all R.I. students.
All students in Pre-k, Kindergarten, and grades 1-5 are required by the RIDOH (R.I. Gen.Laws 16-21-14 and 16-21-14.1) to have a yearly vision screening exam by a qualified person. In order to fulfill this requirement the following two options are available:

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV)
As you may know, it is the season for RSV, and children who attend school are at a higher risk of exposure or reinfection. Almost all children will have an RSV infection by their second birthday. For most, symptoms are like those of a common cold or other upper respiratory infections and generally mild. These symptoms include runny or stuffy nose, decreased appetite, coughing/sneezing, fever, fatigue, sore throat, and headache. RSV is contagious and can spread from viral droplets and can be typically transmitted between 3 and 8 days and the illness typically resolves within 1-2 weeks with supportive care. For prevention, you would take the same steps as you would for a normal cold. These include frequent hand washing, proper coughing/sneezing etiquette, avoiding close contact with others who are feeling sick, and disinfecting frequently used surfaces. If a student tests positive for RSV, you should follow the same protocols for cold or flu. Contact the school nurse for any questions in regards to guidelines/ protocol. |
